Squirrels

Treatments for this pest are included in these services:

Squirrels are small, fast rodents with a penchant for both sprinting across the street in front of your car and for scurrying up the trees in your yard. Squirrels don’t attack humans or animals, as they are skittish and much prefer to run and hide. Famous for collecting and burying nuts, squirrels will also feed on berries, nuts, vegetation, seeds, insects, and even the carcasses of small animals like birds.

A pure example of a “nuisance” pest, squirrels won’t directly harm you. However, their scratching and scurrying can certainly be annoying—and, like other rodents, they can cause substantial property damage by chewing through your home’s insulation and wiring. Squirrels can also wreck your garden or lawn.

How to Identify Squirrels

  • Appearance – Squirrels are small to medium size rodents with bushy tails that can commonly be found outdoors, climbing trees and foraging food.
  • Size – Squirrels weigh less than 2 pounds, and their main body length is generally less than a foot. Their tail can also add up to 10 additional inches of length, for a total length of up to 2 feet.
  • Nest Locations – Squirrels nesting in homes, attics, and garages are a common occurrence. A squirrel will typically gain entry into your home by chewing through siding, climbing through vents, or entering the home through a crawlspace opening. They will usually build a nest and begin to store food.

How to Prevent Squirrels

As rodents or nuisance pests go, squirrels can be pretty cute. But whatever you do, do not feed them. Feeding squirrels will attract more squirrels and eventually prompt them to be more bold and brazen around humans.

Otherwise, preventing squirrels is as simple as removing the reason for them to poke around your property. Secure garbage cans with tight-fitting lids, be sure to keep windows and other entrances closed, and don’t leave food outside for long periods of time.
