We traditionally associate flies with filth and there’s a good reason for that. Flies feed on decaying food and waste and spread bacteria to surfaces, pets, and humans in homes and businesses.

Their scientific name is Diptera, which translates as “two wings.” Since they only have two wings, they make landings often, depositing thousands of bacteria with each stop. They definitely earn their reputation as a nuisance!

Kinds of Flies

Although there are over 16,000 species of flies in North America, we encounter certain groups more typically than others in the southeast. Common species in the area include blow flies, bottle flies, drain flies, fruit flies, gnats, house flies, phorid-humpbacked flies, and horse flies.

How Flies Enter a Home

Since flies are drawn to food, they can enter your home when you bring groceries or snacks into the house, or they sneak in through open windows or doors. Many are attracted to decaying matter such as hair or dead skin found in drains. If an animal has died somewhere in the home –under the house or inside a wall or attic – flies will locate the carcass.

Why Flies are Dangerous

For a small insect, flies can carry a lot of microorganisms. They may have millions of microorganisms in their gut and there’s a possibility of up to half a billion more on their body and legs. Since they float from rotting garbage to utensils and plates, flies can be responsible for spreading bloodstream infection, diarrhea, food poisoning, and meningitis.

Even worse, flies have been known to carry pathogens for diseases in animals and humans like cholera, bacillary dysentery, hepatitis, and typhoid fever.

Horse Flies

Horse flies are a menace along the coast in the southeast because they commonly thrive in ecosystems close to water. With blade-like mouths, female horse fly feeds on the blood of animals and humans. Bites can be painful and cause swelling, allergic reactions, and at times, bacterial infection. Horse flies are unlikely to transmit diseases. But they are usually immune to insect repellent.
