What is considered a flea?

Fleas are a famous nuisance known for pestering pets. These little bugs have a hard, smooth outer shell and powerful legs that can launch them up to 14 inches through the air. Dogs, cats, and rodents are their favorite targets, but that doesn’t put them above biting people. Although it’s rare, some fleas can even transmit the plague or tapeworms to people.

The three main species of fleas you’d likely encounter are the cat flea, dog flea, and ground squirrel flea. Cat fleas are the most common and are the type that afflict your pets. Despite the name, dog fleas aren’t commonly found on dogs, but they can be carriers of a type of tapeworm. Ground squirrel fleas are the most likely to spread the plague.

How do I know if I have fleas in Los Angeles, CA?

There are a few ways to figure out whether or not you have a flea infestation on your property. Seeing a lot of small black specks on your carpet or your pets’ beds is one sign. If your pets are scratching, biting, and licking themselves more often than normal or start losing hair or fur, that’s another possible sign of fleas. You could also start to notice itchy red bumps start to show up on your legs and ankles, which is another common sign of fleas.
